If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you know partly cloudy weather could mean anything. The day could be a bit gloomy, or everything could be soaked before you’ve finished your first cup of coffee. That kind of weather makes timing exterior paint jobs extra tricky. And getting it wrong is an expensive mistake. That’s why any experienced house painter in Everett, WA will tell you that timing is just as important as the paint itself.
Why Timing Matters More Than You Think
Paint needs to chemically bond in order to hold up long term. That bond is sensitive to temperature and humidity, more than most people realize. When conditions aren’t right, the bond is compromised from day one. It might look fine for a year or two, but it will eventually start peeling, bubbling, or fading way before it should.
To make sure our paint cures properly, we only paint exteriors when the following conditions are met:
- Temperature between 40°F – 90°F
- Humidity below 70%
- Siding moisture content below 12%
- Surface temperature at least 5°F above the dew point
What Each Season Actually Looks Like for House Painters in Everett, WA
Spring: Prep Season
Spring in Everett is not about painting. It’s all about preparation. Give your siding a good pressure wash, make sure to clear off any moss or algae that built up over the wet months, and look for any surface damage that needs to be fixed.
Homes closer to the water have one extra thing to deal with – salt. If your home is in Everett near the waterfront or anywhere in Edmonds, this one’s especially relevant. Salt builds up on siding quietly and if it’s not fully washed off before priming, it will work against the new paint’s ability to bond. Easy to overlook, and one of the quieter reasons paint fails before its time.
Summer: The Sweet Spot
July and August are when everything lines up. Temperatures are consistent, humidity drops, and you can actually plan a multi-day project without checking the radar every hour. For most homes in the Everett area, this is the window where you’re going to get the best result.
One thing worth paying attention to on hot summer days is how much heat dark colored siding absorbs. If the surface gets too hot, paint dries too fast and you end up with brush marks and an uneven finish. A good painter works around this by following the shade, starting on sun facing walls early in the morning before the surface heats up and moving accordingly throughout the day.
Fall: A Potential Window If You Move Fast
Early September is an underrated window. UV intensity drops compared to midsummer, which actually reduces the risk of the paint surface skinning over too quickly before the layers underneath have cured. You can get great results in early September. By late September, though, the atmospheric rivers start showing up, and once Everett’s fall rain patterns lock in, your window is closed until next year.
Winter: Mostly a No
For the most part, winter is a no go. There are occasional dry stretches, but the humidity, cold temperature, and short days make it hard to get a reliable result on exterior work.
If you’ve been putting off an inside project though, winter is actually a great time to get it done. Interior painting can be done year round and is a smart way to make progress on your home while you wait for warmer months.
So When Should You Actually Book?
The best time for exterior painting in Everett is June through early September. That’s when conditions are reliable enough to do the job right and have it hold up the way it should.
The one mistake people make every year is waiting until summer to start looking for a painter. By July, good crews are already booked out weeks in advance. If you want to be on the schedule for peak season, reach out early in the spring.
